What to Look for in a Mentor
You already know what you want to do with your business, right? So look at the marketplace, look at your competition, and target some players in your business area that you aspire to be like. Is there someone in your network who’s doing what you want to be doing one day? If so, reach out to them.
So, look at the marketplace and target some players in your business area that you aspire to be like.
Is there someone in your network who’s doing what you want to be doing one day? If so, reach out to them. You don’t have to walk up and say, “Will you be my mentor?” Rather, just establish a relationship and ask for advice.
A mentor can be any person that has skills, experience, or expertise in an area that could help your career. Usually, they possess information you can’t learn in books or online, so it’s vital that you pick his or her brain to get that “intel.”
You’ll be surprised how responsive successful people can be. You’ll find many people are flattered that you are asking for their advice, so they will help you. And that’s what you need if you’re going to make it in the real world—help, from a lot of people.
Don’t just rely on one person, no matter how smart they are.
Have different mentors for different things. Find one for business, one for relationships, one for exercise, one for being a parent. Find a mentor for one side of your business, then another mentor for the other side of your business—see what I mean?
You’re already doing it. You found me, right? I’m mentoring you right now, within the pages of this blog and the upcoming release of All In, so keep seeking out guys like me.
As you get older, you’ll look back and realize that you’ve had mentors for certain stages of your life and then you moved on. And that’s okay. You will never forget the people who helped you. I certainly haven’t forgotten all the people who helped me. My life story has been full of mentors. They aren’t famous, but to me they’re legendary for the wisdom and encouragement they provided.
And when you make it big, don’t forget to thank those mentors who helped in ways big and small, to get you there.
